substance found within the inner layer of shells that are inhabited by
particular types of mollusks, such as the oyster. The pearl itself often comes
in a mixture of colors that can including deep cobalt blue and peacock green
and range through other hues of purple, pink, and cream. On the reverse side of the 2015 1 oz Mother of Pearl Shell
Proof Silver coin is the striking design of a shell, with its interior mother
of pearl visible. In the center of the design is a polished fragment of an
Australian white mother of pearl shell, which is set against the background of
a pattern representing the sea floor. The brilliant design encompasses so much
of the reverse side that the only engravings are “Australian White Mother of
Pearl Shell” and the “P” mint mark. The obverse side of the coin bears the familiar
right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II as designed by Ian Rank-Broadley.
The coin’s weight, purity, metal content, year of minting, and face value are
featured on this side, along with a unique circular banner behind Her Majesty’s
effigy that is not included on most Perth Mint coins. Australia’s oldest operating mint, the Perth Mint is a
holdover from the era of British colonial control of Australia. Once a part of
the Royal Mint of London system, the Perth Mint now operates as a state-owned
entity of the local government in Western Australia.
